In what way did it ruin training for you bud I’m interested? I’m currently on sertraline and I have experienced exactly the same thing

How you said this Jordan is absolutely spot on! When I finish the diet and up kcals mentally it messes with me a bit because mentally I am still in the zone of more condition and less food/ more expenditure etc etc. I really struggle post diet more than the diet itself when I give my body more food it seems to go crazy and appetite goes mad and then I get into the mindset of “now I can eat more” I really need a firm goal post diet that I commit too straight away so mentally I can flick that switch mate!

I agree with Jordan – I probably wouldn’t go back into a deficit from a mental perspective or it’ll continue to happen

My plan was to go into a steep deficit for a few days to remove all the water and potential little fat gain and then go straight back to maintenance?[/quote]

If mentally you can yeah but if you do that to then binge again it’s a viscous circle bud

Yes mentally ill be able too mate. How long would you say stay in a deficit for? How harsh of a deficit would you do too?

Reduce carbs for 1-2 days let the water drop off – get yourself together and then slowly return to a maintenance phase my man.

if you drop KCAL to low again you will just end binging again and again.

Tbh you could just return to maintenance calories right now and the water water would also drop of slowly.

Dont do anything extreme and you will be fine.

Thanks for you reply mate. Do I even need to reduce carbs? Can’t I just go into a big calorie deficit and the water will drop off? Or reduce carbs?

Yup, our body is pretty flexible , there will be increase in thermodynamics, an increase in subconscious neat , an increase in conscious neat – a lot of the excess cals from an over feed , are used . Don’t worry, eating like that is normal after a hard diet and 4K over maintenance also isn’t a hard binge if your pretty Damn lean . Don’t worry at all 🙂

Hi Jordan yes I am pretty lean tbh. Probably sitting at 10% body fat or lower. Yes it was probably around 4K over maintenance for that day, Jordan should I reduce carbs today and restrict calories a lot? Or just get myself in a normal deficit for a couple days and let it drop off, how should I approach it today and the next following days in terms of food?

You will gain some fat but it’s very very minimal , not enough to run an extended deficit again, a few days will take the water off , just be aware if you run too low again, you will binge again within the next couple days

Hi Jordan thanks for you reply bud. Yes it was quite a hard binge but it was one day. Like if you went hard for a day will the fat gain be very very minimal? Like 4K over maintenance for that day for example mate?

First of all: its very individual how you react and even ssris are all slightly different in their affinities regarding the 5HT (serotonin) receptor-subtypes.

Most ssris(and snris) can cause a reduction of dopamine and noradrenaline in the prefrontal cortex due to some kind of interaction with the 5HT-2-receptors. This can (not must!) lead to emotional numbness and maybe even anhedonia.

If you have problems with anxieties, ssris are still first choice treatment, but to increase motivation and anhedonia-symptoms, 5HT-2-Antagonists can help:
You could add Mirtazapine or Agomelatine.

The augmentation with mirtazapine is quite common and works well. It even reduces ssris side effects like sweating, sexual dysfunction and insomnia. But leads to new side effects like sleepyness during the day (first 1-2weeks) and strongly increased appetite (weight gain..).
Agomelatine is quite new, there is not much data for augmentation with ssris. But I think side effects would be like zero and due to its 5HT-2-antagonism it could be effective too.. maybe its worth a shot. If it doesnt work try it with mirtazapine, if that doesnt work try something else..
Sadly its common that it take a long time to find the right medication.

So for example ssri(or snri) in the morning, mirtazapine/agomelatine before sleeping.

But of course, please consult your doctor with this topic.
I hope this doctor is specialized in this area because most dont know anything about subtypes of 5HT receptor and how they regulate gaba, dopamin, noradrenaline in different areas of the brain.

Hello mate, great reply thankyou bud. Yes mate I feel I get on with sertraline it’s just the way I have felt since being on the tablet. Feel very flat, numb. My overall drive and motivation has decreased. Anxiety has gone, I still get it at times but nowhere near as much so it is good for that, but I have also noticed many other cons of being on the tablet. Maybe SSRIS in general make you feel like this??

Emotional blunting is a common problem with SSRIs. Different ones work for different people. Consider asking your doctor about switching to a different SSRI or anxiety/depression medication, or lowering your current dose of sertaline.

Don’t do anything without consulting your doctor first though as SSRIs can be tricky in that way

Yes mate, just feel very flat, deflated, numb etc. Libido has taken a massive hit too. It’s not the tablet I don’t like I feel I get on with sertraline well it’s just the way it has been making me feel

Tom, I have been on sertraline for over 3 years now. 100mg daily. Started with 25mg then 50 mg then 100mg seems to be the sweet spot. Initially all i had for side effects was diarrhea but that went away after a few weeks. It has never taken any motivation out of me. I still get excited about some activities I enjoy and I still obsess over the gym. I have taken it both at day time and night and still no side effects like you’ve mentioned. The problem with SSRIs is that they all work different on everyone so you might need to try a different one. The medication is supposed to level out with your conditions not make your life harder than it is

Yeah no it’s not making life harder, it helps with anxiety 100%. It’s just I don’t like the way I feel on sertraline at times. Very flat, deflated, emotionless, numb, no feeling for anything it’s strange. I also have absolutely no sex drive or libido really on the tablet

    Hey Tom,

I’ll jump in here as my girlfriend has been on sertraline since last September/October now. She was given it for anxiety and panic disorder.

First 8 weeks or so were horrendous for her! They certainly don’t lie when they say it gets worse before it gets better.

She really struggled to get up in the mornings, didn’t have the energy, like you didn’t have the motivation to do anything and was finding the meds weren’t doing anything and made the anxiety worse. She would go from feeling great to just…nothing. It was really weird for me to see and she is someone who trains, does gym classes, obstacle course races like Spartans etc.

She really had to force herself in the end to get out and face the world and it was a STRUGGLE!

I’d say it was about 3-4months before she finally got the independence back, went back to the gym and did a 360. She doesn’t get the anxiety anymore, can feel when it’s there or about to take a turn but equally knows how to control it and doesn’t let it surface.

    She’s still on it now.

How long have you been on it for?

It sounds like it might not be the right one for you and I know there’s others to try if not?

Thanks so much for reply. Yes I think sertraline is the right one I have been on it before for a year, I came off for a period and then doctor put me on citalopram which I really did not get on with at all. Now back on sertraline and feel okay, anxiety is nowhere near as bad but I just feel very flat and deflated emotionless, no feeling towards anything loss of libido sex drive etc. I feel it may just be SSRIS in general

  • If you go back to plan then your be fine, it’s just one day.

Thanks for your reply bud. Yes mate I’m nipping in the bud now 100%. Straight back to plan tomorrow. It was literally one evening from 8pm till about 9.30pm. Most of it like I said was clean foods like massive bowls of cream of rice and oats with whey and granola I did eat a little chocolate but that was it and I have been super active today 30,000+ steps

Hi consist. What SSRI are you on atm? I am not 100% sure if you can take tren with and SSRI. Maybe someone smarter on this topic can churm in, do you have any side affects whilst taking antidepressants? And does it affect training, drive, motivation for training and overall life etc?
