Awesome session today. Got in the barn before it got too hot and it paid off.

I have a nice long period of rebuilding my squat after a TFL tear and WSM got in the way of training it. Moving to squatting twice a week with the SSB while my tricep is limiting my training. Starting really light and building slowly.

SSB Squat – 200 6×2
SSB Goodmornings – x10,20
Seated leg curl – x10,20
Leg Press – 2×20
Uphill walking lunges – 2×12/leg

Also saw the NHS ortho today to talk through what they do with the surgery. Still seeing the private surgeon on Friday and will go with him if he does operate.

Right talking straps and chalk.

A base layer of liquid chalk will dry your hands out and keep gym owners happy as there’s no mess. Only use a small amount to dry your hands out – too much will actually cause some grip issues.

Figure if 8 straps are great as they pretty much make it impossible to drop the bar. This can also be an issue as if you pick up an injury and can’t drop the bar. If you were pulling max lifts I’d recommend them but anything over 4 reps I’d go for standard straps.

With standard straps I also like to put a little chalk on them to grip the bar. I also have a unique way of putting them on – you’ve inspired me to do a video on this so keep an eye on my IG this week.

As for which ones to buy I use the silverback Gymwear straps and figure of 8s. For transparency I am sponsored by them but I’ve put some serious poundage through them and had zero issues. If you do want a pair here’s a discount code: ABISH10

Hope this helps mate.

Hey Callum

Have a hard think about what you change going from prep to off season.

Do you add anything or take anything away drug-wise?

Is there a significant change in load to the exercises you lifted?

Have you experienced a significant bodyweight gain.

This is quite a specific issue so try and work out what changes for you prep to off season and we might be able to give a better guess at what’s going on.

1) depends on how much you sweat and or how much intra you have. I usually go through 2 litres in a session.

2) I drink mine through the session from start to finish, never really pay much attention to it really.

No training today just spent some time out in the glorious sunshine and got some bits done around the house and garden.

Had a call from the NHS and they offered me an appointment tomorrow so I’m going in to see what they say. I already have my private appointment set for Friday but there’s no harm in seeing what another surgeon says. Also gives me a chance to ask more questions about the surgery.

I’m not a fan of looking up for squats or deadlifts.

I’ve always kept my head neutral as it feels more comfortable and keeps my spine stacked nicely.

I always coach people to focus on a spot in front of them to get their head position and then lift from there

Yes this seems very logcial. What is your opinion on looking at the ground like 1 meter infront. Do you advice against it?
Nope that’s fine if it feels comfortable to you.

I prefer the free weight barbell row BUT this is mainly due to me not having a smith machine haha

If I did I would rotate both with varying grips where possible.

Back in the gym today for some contralateral push/pull and managed some DB lateral Raises as well.

(Left arm only)
SA Pulldown 4×6
SA Seated DB Press 4×6
SA Seated Row 4×6
SA Chest Press 4×6
SA Hammer Curl 3×8
SA Pressdowns 3×8

(Both arms)
DB lateral raises 4×8-12

Just a stimulus for my non injured side to aid in retaining muscle. I will be running these movements while my right arm is limited, especially post surgery.

Got the lateral raises in while I could as post surgery I’ll be in a brace and it wouldn’t be wise to hit this movement.

Finished up the day with an evening walk with a hyperactive fur missile.

Gutted to hear about this man, was really looking forward to seeing you pull that 505, but love your attitude to it all.
Do any docs in the UK prescribe things like peptides for athletes to help them repair?

Thanks Tim.

No doctors will prescribe peptides as they are essentially products that are not approved for human use only “research”

There are some doctors who do research them and are looking at the literature for benefits to their use such as Dr Matt Milner. Check out his IG for his posts on peptides.

Not much to report today.

Trying to get a head start on planning my rehab and return to competition as I have to stay active and I love programme design.

It’s very easy to get an injury and focus on what you can’t do. The most successful athletes will pick up an injury and focus on what they CAN do in order to become a more rounded athletes.

So from tomorrow I’ll be back in the gym and doing some contralateral work and train some Upperbody around my injury.

Hopefully this log will help walk some people through the rehab process if/when they pick up and injury themselves. I spent 10 years working at Harlequins rugby rehabbing athletes back from serious injury so getting back into the planning process is going to be fun!

I have a couple of tutorials on YouTube on the squat and deadlift – search Adam Bishop Strongman.

I would say however that with your pathologies in your hips and lowerbody I would see the benefit in some face to face coaching. Sometimes the old ways are the best. In the age of the internet everyone has moved to the much more convenient online coaching/tutorial videos but in some cases the eye of a coach needs to be there in person.

I would advise trying to find a qualified and trusted coach in your area and asking them to take you through the key coaching points of a couple of movements.

Getting basic movements nailed early on will be beneficial from a performance point of view but also from an injury prevention point of view as you will experience some specific limitations that others would not.

I do have a trainer thankfully! He isn’t able to come to every session so i was looking for something to fill in the gaps when I’m by myself. Thanks Adam this was super helpful!
That’s great news! In that case I would listen to your trainer when it comes to technical advice.

Another word of caution – the internet is a wealth of information which is constantly conflicting. I would really advise listening to your trainer if you value his/her opinion. A coach should have a clear development plan for his athlete and watching too many YouTube gurus with multiple opinions on form can confuse the lifter.

Find a reliable source of information and go with it for a significant period of time to allow it to have an impact on improving your form.

Got an MRI and a consultation lined up with the surgeon for next Friday then looking at surgery possibly end of july.

Withdrew from the Shaw Classic today and unfortunately I will be out of the deadlift as well as I doubt I can pull 505 with one arm.

Still some positives – going to drop some body fat and get fitter while I’m out before I ramp things up for BSM 2023. Always opportunities to improve.
