I have a couple of tutorials on YouTube on the squat and deadlift – search Adam Bishop Strongman.

I would say however that with your pathologies in your hips and lowerbody I would see the benefit in some face to face coaching. Sometimes the old ways are the best. In the age of the internet everyone has moved to the much more convenient online coaching/tutorial videos but in some cases the eye of a coach needs to be there in person.

I would advise trying to find a qualified and trusted coach in your area and asking them to take you through the key coaching points of a couple of movements.

Getting basic movements nailed early on will be beneficial from a performance point of view but also from an injury prevention point of view as you will experience some specific limitations that others would not.

I do have a trainer thankfully! He isn’t able to come to every session so i was looking for something to fill in the gaps when I’m by myself. Thanks Adam this was super helpful! [/quote]
That’s great news! In that case I would listen to your trainer when it comes to technical advice.

Another word of caution – the internet is a wealth of information which is constantly conflicting. I would really advise listening to your trainer if you value his/her opinion. A coach should have a clear development plan for his athlete and watching too many YouTube gurus with multiple opinions on form can confuse the lifter.

Find a reliable source of information and go with it for a significant period of time to allow it to have an impact on improving your form.

Got an MRI and a consultation lined up with the surgeon for next Friday then looking at surgery possibly end of july.

Withdrew from the Shaw Classic today and unfortunately I will be out of the deadlift as well as I doubt I can pull 505 with one arm.

Still some positives – going to drop some body fat and get fitter while I’m out before I ramp things up for BSM 2023. Always opportunities to improve.

Managed to get an ultrasound today.

I’ve torn the medial third of my tricep tendon so it is still attached but is compromised. For normal people this wouldn’t be a problem but with the loads I lift above head it’s is likely that I will need a surgical intervention.

I have a call with my elbow surgeon tomorrow so we should have an answer then.

I’m actually ok with surgery if it’s going to leave the tricep in a stronger place. I’ve done surgery before with my bicep and came back stronger so it’s not at all daunting for me.

It’s a bit shit as if I do have surgery I will be out of the deadlift champs and the Shaw Classic but in the long run it may well be a good thing.

    Not much to report today.

Had an x ray but I have to wait for the ultrasound in the next couple of days.

We will know the extent of the damage then but it’s not feeling good.

As Clare said if you can’t do another rep then you’ve reached failure – no need to over think it.

As far as comparing your smith machine press to a chest press: while the smith is fixed it does still allow for a little more movement in terms of stabilisation compared to a fixed chest press. This means that you will find you are able to “grind” more often on the chest press than the smith press.

This doesn’t mean that one is better than the other, just different.

Pretty shit one today. Well saying that the lifting was great but a kit malfunction on my top set has resulted in an injury.

Deadlifted a fast 415kg rep but my strap got stuck on the bar and my feet slipped out from under me when I put the bar down resulting in me being sent head first into the floor in front of me.

Got one hand free to break my fall but unfortunately all the force went through my triceps in a stretched position and I’ve done some damage around my elbow. Also managed to headbutt the floor so I’ve got a massive black eye right now.

Getting a scan tomorrow to assess the damage. I will keep you all posted

    Much needed rest day today.

Got my morning walk in then spent the rest of the day watching the cricket and F1.

Big deadlift session tomorrow – time to make some big big numbers look like an empty bar.

From wearing the CPAP point of view my best advice is make sure you force yourself to wear it for the first couple of nights.

It will be uncomfortable and you might wake up early and think about taking it off but trust me if you wear it for the full night for the first couple of days it’s plain sailing after that.

Interesting day today on a photoshoot for an artistic project all to do with the power of movements.

Spent the day semi naked in studio covered in sand as I picked stuff up for photos and videos. Bit weird but the images and video they took were amazing.

Looking forward to a proper rest day tomorrow as they had me lifting circus DBs, atlas stones and doing arm over arm.

Busy morning sorting out a couple of things before getting down the farm for events training. Everything was pretty manageable load wise today and all the lifts went well. This really was a feeder session into the show next week, ensuring my body is ready for the coming events.

    Circus DB – 100×5
    Farmers walk – 145x30m
Atlas stones – 120/130/150/180 all one motions

So if I’m in the camp of allowing for a small amount of thoracic rounding during deadlifts as long as the lumbar is locked in.

I would say however that it is easier to lock you thoracic spine in with an RDL than from the floor due to the elevated start position and you should always be shooting to keep it tight. Some rounding is ok but it’s not a license to get sloppy and go full snap back.

Ultimately if you are unable to maintain upper back tightness then you have a weakness in your upper back that needs addressing long term.

In summary – always attempt to keep your upper back braced but don’t sweat it too much if there is a small amount of rounding for the final reps of the set.

Lowerbody session this afternoon and managed to progress everything as planned. I can really feel the Anderson squats helping my deadlift.

    SSB Anderson squat w/chains – 220+40 3×3
Leg curl – 2 work sets
Bulgarian split squat – 2 work sets
    Leg press – 3×20

Recovery work today. Got out for my morning walk with the dogs and some CWI done before bed.

Body was feeling it a little this morning but everything has loosened off as the day went on.

Ready for a morning lowerbody session tomorrow before some soft tissue work in the afternoon

I find neutral grip to be a much more shoulder friendly option when pressing for most people.

When looking to compare two machines it is important to remember that it is very individual. My advice would be to try it out for a couple of weeks and see how your body like it. You can feel which muscle it favours for you.

An example for you – I would have two of my rugby players perform a neutral grip DB bench press and one would recruit his pecs heavily while the other would predominantly recruit his triceps.

Everyone is different – give it a go for a significant period of time and see how it feels.
