He’ll then usually go back to normal set 1 loading rep range for following couple of weeks, then come back to the Lower rep range and more than likely progress that nicely.
From training with him I can see he does that on feel and how good the session is going/feeling. If it’s there, take it mentality

An injury from earlier in the year has actually turned out to be a broken back!! My L5 is fractured on both sides. It cannot he fixed but it can be managed and I’ll do my best to do so and still progress my physique and my career.

Also don’t look at it as a Lower back loading movement – it’s a posterior chain movement, so every muscle on the rear side of your body is under tension here – hams glutes lower and upper back etc – your work them all through different ranges

If you dont have that much kit then maybe you can use both the smith and the back squat variations. Also on the smith you can do a lying leg press – just get someone to spot that can twist the bar when you start and finish the set.

I have a leg press in my gym.
I do stiff leg and smith squat in my first session.
In my second session I do leg press and lunges.. think about to add free squat to the second rotation.
I’m afraid to miss the benefit from free squat.

I don’t think back squat is necessary at all – if anything it’s actually a mechanically difficult movement to do with decent load meaning a lot of people compensate and actually take a lot of stress away from the quads. So hit push last night and had a great session!! Felt strong considering Ive been away! Rest day today to prepare for tomorrow.
I’ll also be seeing my chiropractor in the morning for a once over which has been helping me massively of late! If you don’t get regular treatment then you really should look into guys ????
